Rip DVD to Mac with Handbrake

Handbrake is a freeware that convert between multiple video formats and even rips DVD to MP4, MKV. Today I would like to introduce how to rip DVD to Mac for free with Handbrake(Apple just released Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion. Handbrake is not compatible with Mountain Lion, but maybe it will upgrade later).

Download handbrake

Please put your DVD into the optical drive of your Mac.

Download and install handbrake latest version. Run it. Let's set up the output destination first. From its top menu "Tool" > "Options" > "General" tab > 'Defalt Path'. Click "Browse" button to determine the output path.

After this setting, all output files will be located in this folder automatically, so you don't need to set up each output file location.

Now, hit "Source" button to add DVD to the program. If you are importing commercial DVD, you would probably get a warning like this.

Note, handbrake can't handle commercial DVD due to the copyright protection. However, the program handles CSS decryption through an open source decryption library that's used in the popular VLC Media Player. So, you are required to have VLC installed on Mac if you are ripping commercial DVD on Mac.

Note, here is an ultimate solution to rip copy protected DVD on Mac.

After you have successfully adding the DVD to handbrake, the main window will change to give you the total length of the movie, and the chapters.

Select the "Regular > Normal" preset from its presets list on its right panel. It's the easiest since handbrake already optimized those figures like video/audio codec, frame rate, etc. Of course, you can design all those figures by yourself.

Now, hit "Start" button to begin the DVD ripping on Mac.
